Emergency Surgery and Endoscopy at Mountainside

Veterinarian Holding Gray Cat

Did you know that we now have a full ER team with seven experienced veterinarians ready to assist with urgent cases? While our veterinarians are not board-certified surgeons, they are skilled emergency clinicians who routinely perform a variety of life-saving procedures when time is critical.

In 2025 alone, our team (along with the outstanding support staff who make it all possible!) has performed 61 surgeries so far, ranging from stitch-ups to splenectomies, GDVs to enucleations. Our most common procedures are exploratory laparotomies for foreign body ingestion and wound repairs.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the surgeries we’ve performed this year:

  • Splenectomy and liver biopsies — performed by Dr. Harry Cozens on a 5-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer with a large mass

  • Exploratory laparotomy and gastropexy — performed by Dr. Dian Kartolo on a 10-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog with GDV

  • Enucleation — performed by Dr. Dian Kartolo on a 3-year-old Pug

  • Exploratory laparotomy — performed by Dr. Neil Kirk on a 1-year-old Husky who ingested a large piece of fabric

  • Exploratory laparotomy — performed by Dr. Kelly Tucker on a 1-year-old Poodle cross who ingested foreign material

In addition to surgery, our ER veterinarians are also skilled in foreign body removals via endoscopy, providing a minimally invasive option for select cases.

While we are not a surgical referral service, we’re proud to support the veterinary community by providing urgent surgical care when patients can’t wait.

If you have a patient in need of emergency surgery or an endoscopic foreign body removal, we’re here to help—please don’t hesitate to contact us or refer directly to our ER team.
