Caring for the Caregivers: Summer Self-Care and Support
July 17, 2025 · For Pet Owners

Veterinary medicine is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also emotionally and physically demanding—especially in the busy summer season. Compassion fatigue, burnout, and moral stress are real challenges in our field, and it’s important to recognize that your wellbeing matters just as much as the care you provide to patients.
As the clinic pace picks up and days get longer, remember to recharge yourself, too. Prioritize hydration, take advantage of the sunlight for a quick walk or vitamin D boost, and protect your sleep even when schedules shift. Small moments—a five-minute breather, a popsicle in the breakroom, or a quiet pause—can make a real difference.
Most importantly, know that you’re not alone. Peer check-ins, taking that much-needed break (yes, really), or reaching out to mental health resources are all valid and important steps. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness, and supporting each other is how we continue to show up—not just for our patients, but for one another.
Let’s keep caring for ourselves and each other this summer.
