What to Do If I Find a Healthy Lost Pet?
General

At Mountainside Animal Emergency & Specialty, our team is dedicated to providing emergency and urgent care to sick or injured animals. While we share a building with the District of North Vancouver (DNV) shelter, we are separate organizations with different roles and responsibilities.
If the animal appears healthy and uninjured, here’s what to do:
Take the pet home temporarily – Most pets are found close to home, and staying in the area gives them the best chance of reuniting with their family.
Post on local lost & found groups – Use Facebook groups like
Lost Pets of North Vancouver, PetSearchers, and neighbourhood apps like Nextdoor
Check for a microchip – You can bring the pet to us at Mountainside to have it scanned. If a chip is found, we’ll provide the microchip number so you can contact the registry.
Call DNV Animal Services – If you're unable to hold onto the pet or need further guidance, contact DNV Animal Control at 604-990-2311.
Contact your local SPCA – If you're outside the DNV area, your local BC SPCA branch may be the best option.
What we can do at Mountainside:
Scan for a microchip
Provide the chip number for owner lookup
Help redirect you to the most appropriate services
Please note: We are not a shelter and cannot house healthy stray animals. The DNV shelter is located upstairs, but due to limited staffing, they are not currently able to intake animals directly.
Thank you for being part of a compassionate and proactive community. Together, we can give lost pets the best chance of finding their way home.
